India, with its many religions,
has a multitude of religious festivals.
Ganesh is the god of wisdom and prosperity and
Ganeshotsav, which falls in August/September,
is celebrated with particular enthusiasm in
Mumbai. Its climax is colourful and noisy and
involves tens of thousands of people converging
on Chowpatty Beach to immerse the images of
the elephant-god Ganesh into the sea.
Deepavali falls in October/November and
is a joyous occasion, a celebration of happiness
and friendship, marked in Mumbai with an ear-splitting
cacophony of bangers and fireworks.
Eid is celebrated in various parts of
Mumbai where Muslims celebrate the festival
by distributing sweets and visiting friends.
Christmas is another festival that is
celebrated with pomp and show in Mumbai. The
various famous churches of Mumbai are seen sparkling
from Christmas eve through New Year.
