Mumbai is a modern liberal
city with modern liberal views towards women.
Still many women tourists find it easier to
venture out with a companion. With a male companion
you'll notice that no questions are directed
to you.
In the streets of Mumbai at least women in jeans
and t-shirts seem to outnumber those in saris
or salwar kameez and the chick designer boutiques
are chock-full of haute couture. In other cities
in India, it is a very different story and women
need to dress fairly conservatively to avoid
causing offense.
Getting stared at is something which you will
have to get used to in Mumbai. Don't return male stares
as this will be considered a come-on; just ignore
them. Dark glasses can help. Other harassments
likely to be encountered include obscene comments,
touching-up and jeering.

In Mumbai getting involved in inane conversations with
men is also considered a turn-on. Keep discussions
down to necessary minimum unless you are interested
in getting hassled. If you are getting the uncomfortable
feeling that he is encroaching on your space,
the chances are he is. A firm request to keep
away is usually enough. Firmly return an errant
limbs, put an item of luggage between you and
him and if all else fails find a new spot.
You are also within our rights to tell him to
shove off!
